How much detail actually survives embroidery?

Less than people expect. This is the part of ordering patches that disappoints most often, so it is worth understanding before you design one.

A stitch has width

That single fact explains almost everything on this page.

On a screen, a line can be one pixel wide. In thread, the narrowest mark you can make is one stitch, and a stitch is a physical piece of thread with real thickness. Anything in your artwork thinner than that cannot be reproduced — it either thickens to the minimum, or it disappears.

This is not a quality difference between shops. It is the medium.

What gets simplified

Text under about a quarter inch. The most common casualty. Letterforms need enough width for the strokes to read as distinct. Below that threshold, an e fills in and becomes a blob, and lowercase generally suffers before uppercase.

Hairlines and thin outlines. A fine keyline around a shape either thickens noticeably or is dropped. Where it separates two colours, it usually has to thicken.

Gradients and soft shadows. Thread has no opacity and no blending. A gradient is resolved into a small number of discrete colour bands, or flattened to one colour. Drop shadows generally go.

Very small gaps. Two shapes a fraction of a millimetre apart merge into one. The gap needs to be at least as wide as a stitch to survive as a gap.

Photographic detail. Faces, textures and anything continuous-tone do not translate. They have to be redrawn as flat shapes.

What survives well

  • Bold, solid shapes
  • Clear silhouettes
  • Uppercase text at reasonable size
  • Strong colour contrast between adjacent areas
  • Simple linework with real thickness to it

The designs that come out best are the ones that would still read as a black-and-white stencil.

Size changes everything

The same design at 2 inches and at 4 inches is not the same problem. Detail that fails at 2 inches is often perfectly fine at 4, because the absolute size of every element doubles while the stitch width stays the same.

If a design has detail you are unwilling to lose, the cheapest fix is usually to make the patch bigger rather than to simplify. We work from 2 to 5 inches on the longest edge.

How you find out before committing

You see it. Every order gets a proof — your artwork redrawn as it will actually be stitched, with every simplification called out explicitly rather than quietly applied.

Nothing goes to the production floor until you approve that proof. If you do not like what the simplification did, that is the moment to change the design, change the size, or change construction.

If the finished patches do not match the proof you approved, we remake the order or refund it in full.

When the answer is “use PVC instead”

If your design depends on fine detail — small type, thin lines, hard colour edges — moulded PVC holds all of it. That is the main reason to choose it, and it is a better answer than fighting thread for something it cannot do.
